You are invited to apply to become a correspondent for the 11th International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Auckland, New Zealand which will take place on April 19-22, 2023.
Responsibilities of the sketching correspondents:
• Sketch the activities of the symposium daily during all four days, April 19-22. These activities could include pre-symposium set-up, workshops, demos, lectures, sketch walks and informal meals with other sketchers. The ability to quickly capture people and their activities is essential. (Participation in workshops and demos yourself would not be possible.)
• Bring attention to the fact that the Symposium is happening in Auckland / Tamaki Makaurau – New Zealand / Aotearoa by establishing a sense of place through drawing.
• Post sketches and a brief written article each day on the global USk blog. A reportage-style of sketching and writing is encouraged. Correspondents are also encouraged to share on social media (giving priority to the website) using the symposium hashtag: #USkSymposium2023 #USkAuckland2023
• Have the technical ability and equipment to support the above task, such as a camera and laptop or other means to upload images and text.
• Able to write comfortably in English.
• Work with the other symposium correspondents and symposium committee as a team.
We are recruiting one local correspondent to accompany our international correspondent. In addition to having the above responsibilities, the local correspondent will serve as a guide to the rest of the team by being familiar with the layout of Auckland and local customs. The local correspondent will receive an honorarium in the amount of five nights’ lodging or $500USD honorarium.

1. Local correspondents have to be current residents of Auckland or New Zealand and will be relied upon for help and guidance to the city by other volunteers.
2. Your name, residence and contact information.
3. In a few paragraphs (no more than 500 words), please tell us why you are interested in becoming a symposium correspondent and why you would be the best candidate for this volunteer job.
4. Describe one or two innovative ideas you have for covering the event. (For example: interviewing a few instructors or demonstrators to get their perspective of the symposium; interviewing the symposium participant who has traveled the most miles.)
5. Include 5-6 examples of your work done on location in reportage style, especially those that show people engaged in activities. Write brief descriptions of these sketches explaining the activities in the same way that you might write a blog post as a correspondent. Please indicate the locations and how long each drawing took to complete.
6. Include links to your personal blog, regional USk blog or other platform showing examples of your sketches and writing.
7. In addition to all of the above, please include one or two paragraphs about your familiarity with the symposium location and how you would use that familiarity to help the rest of the correspondents team. (For example, the local correspondent is responsible for providing detailed maps, leading team members on a walk to workshop locations before the start of the symposium, and offering general tips to make everyone’s job easier.)
Selection process
Symposium planning team and Executive Board will evaluate applications based on how well candidates meet the stated requirements.
